Nothing about his predicament made sense to our family at the time. He was 38, a nonsmoker and nondrinker, with no history of cancer in his family. My parents were conservative evangelicals deeply skeptical of the medical industry, and his diagnosis kicked their beliefs into high gear. Traveling evangelists and local preachers claimed that the cancer was, in fact, a satanic attack. This gave us a way out: We simply had to muster enough faith to believe a miracle was possible and God would heal him.

Soon after leaving his job, Gallo took an acting class in New York City — which wasn't too far from his home in New Jersey — and fell in love with the craft. He decided he wanted to be an actor and moved to the Big Apple to chase his dreams. His car insurance is also fairly cheap because he's on his parents' plan and reimburses them for the cost. His only other insurance cost is renters insurance for his apartment, since he receives free health insurance through the state. "I am happier now than when I was working for the insurance company," he says.

It will mean fundamentally reevaluating our conception of free will and human agency — and reckoning with our tortured relationship with shame. Many health plans have refused to cover GLP-1s for weight loss , citing limited approval from the Food and Drug Administration. I don't know when I first became overweight, but I remember the moment I was taught to be ashamed of it. In a statement to The New York Times, a spokesman for Lululemon said the company did not intend to exclude anyone from the photographs. The images were sent to the runners who appeared in the photo shoot but were not used by Lululemon or noname, the spokesman said. That included being a team leader for the noname program, leading the 8-minute-30 second-mile group. “A big part of what was attractive about the noname program was its emphasis on inclusivity and embracing people’s full identities and experiences,” she wrote. Noor Abukaram, a runner who was told she couldn’t run in her hijab in high school and pushed back, criticized Lululemon’s decision to leave out Ms. Saad.

It was well before dawn on Sunday when the cyclists first began to congregate — a handful at first, then a few dozen, then hundreds. Not far away, the white lights of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge — the iconic starting point of the New York City Marathon — shimmered like a constellation in the dark sky. But these athletes were happy bathing in the fluorescent glow of a humble 24-hour Dunkin’ Donuts in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. In the past two decades, for a growing number of cyclists, the store’s parking lot has become an iconic starting point in its own right for one irresistible annual challenge: to ride the marathon course in the sliver of time after the roads are closed to traffic and before any official races begin.

Tola broke away around mile 19 and finished the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours, four minutes and 58 seconds on a partly cloudy, balmy day. He surpassed Geoffrey Mutai’s previous mark of 2:05:06 set in 2011.

"The people of New York (are) amazing," said Tola, who hoisted his arms aloft as he claimed his first World Marathon Major title after taking third in London earlier this year. Obiri produced an extraordinary final kick in the women's race to outlast Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey, who crossed the finish line about six seconds behind, as last year's winner, Kenyan Sharon Lokedi, finished third in 2:27:33. Swiss Marcel Hug broke the tape in 1:25:29 in the men’s wheelchair race, picking up a record-extending sixth title in New York, while his compatriot, Catherine Debrunner, won the women's race in 1:39:32. The race capped a blockbuster year for the World Marathon Majors in which both the men’s and women’s world records were obliterated. Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum beat compatriot Eliud Kipchoge's world record mark in Chicago last month, while Ethiopian Tigst Assefa shattered the women's record in Berlin in September.

NEW YORK (AP) — Tamirat Tola wasn't thinking about breaking the New York City Marathon course record as he was running by himself in Central Park for the last few miles of the race. Albert Korir of Kenya, who won the 2021 NYC Marathon, finished second nearly two minutes behind Tola. This was a stellar women's field that was expected to potentially take down the course record of 2:22:31 set by Margaret Okayo in 2003. There were talks of breaking the course record and doing all the things, after a bit it was like that’s not going to happen. Catherine Debrunner of Switzerland won her New York debut, shattering the course record in the women's wheelchair race.

Image This year’s women’s race was oddly slow until the last few miles. Tola had arrived in New York with questions about his fitness after he dropped out of the marathon at the world championships in Budapest this summer. When she made her marathon debut in New York last year, she went out fast before struggling to a sixth-place finish. “Sometimes,” Obiri said, “you learn from your mistakes.”She put those lessons to use in Boston earlier this year when she won her first world marathon major. By then, only Obiri, Gidey, Lokedi and two others — Viola Cheptoo, the runner-up in 2021, and Brigid Kosgei, a five-time world marathon major champion — were still in contention.

On Sunday, Levins will tackle his first New York City Marathon as one of the favorites. He often runs 170 to 180 miles a week, which, at the top end of that range, averages out to nearly 26 miles a day. Three to four times a week, he runs three times a day — once in the morning, once in the afternoon and once at night, almost always on his own. Jim Finlayson, his coach, said it took a “unique mind-set” to train that way. “The fact that Cam can not only handle the mileage physically but handle it psychologically,” Finlayson said.

For most of her life, Molly Huddle had a fairly simple routine before the start of a race. Huddle, an elite runner, would pack a bag, eat a pre-race meal, do some drills and get to the start line. She knew what she was doing: Huddle is a two-time Olympian and former American record-holder in the 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters and half marathon. “I never thought I’d think about breastfeeding as much as I do now,” said Huddle, who finished third in her New York City Marathon debut in 2016. For the second year in a row, new mothers — two top American elite marathoners among them — will be starting the New York City Marathon with something new speckled along the course: lactation stations.

From dawn to dusk one day last winter, Liliana Pech-Adrian kept checking her bank account hoping that a $295 charge would appear. That’s the registration fee for the New York City Marathon, which would show up if the longtime recreational runner was selected through the race’s entry lottery. Pech-Adrian, a 39-year-old mother of four who lives outside Austin, Texas, yearned to run New York’s most famous race after watching the city from afar during the Covid-19 pandemic. “If I get to run on those streets that were so sad and shut down and empty, it’s like a victory,” she said.

Michael Reaves/Getty ImagesThe two records in quick succession heightened the debate about how carbon-plated shoes – commonly referred to as “super shoes” – are rapidly changing the distance-running landscape. Today, they are worn by virtually all elite marathon runners, both for racing and for training, and by many casual runners, too. Tobias Schwartz/AFP/Getty ImagesThompson has other reservations about super shoes. “A lot of people say, well, people recover faster from training in the super shoes and therefore they can do more training, better training,” he added. “What I believe I’m seeing is that those who train all the time in super shoes will reduce their body’s ability to optimize biokinetic energy production.

The New York City Marathon is not where world records are set. Runners there can easily be dropped off by a cab shortly before the starting gun, yawn and get going. This is a marathon for 50,000 people who go on a public transportation odyssey to reach a brutally challenging course that crosses five bridges and five boroughs. It’s a race for runners who want to prove this city deserves to be called the greatest on the planet, home of the greatest marathon in the world.
